Last week I saw Director Anthony Hemingway’s film Red Tails. As you probably know from all the publicity, the film is about the wartime exploits of the Tuskegee Airmen. If you’re expecting a review of how this famous unit came to be or other background information, this isn’t the film for you. This action movie starts and ends at forward operating bases near the front during World War Two.

I enjoyed the film and recommend it. It’s the kind of movie you wanted to see when you were eight, all action and none of the gushy stuff (well, just a little).

This George Lucas production stars Gerald McRaney as the Squadron Commander and Cuba Gooding Jr., as his executive officer. (If you missed seeing Gooding in Men of Honor, please do yourself a favor and see it). The are six other lead actors who get a the majority of screen time as pilots.

Perhaps out of historical accuracy Gooding is attached to a large pipe (a “Full Bent Billiard” I believe) in every single scene. I’m all for historical accuracy but, the pipe becomes distracting as the movie progresses watching Gooding fumble around with the pipe, situate it between his perfect teeth, light it, and render salutes with it in his mouth. I like Gooding but I don’t believe the man has ever had a pipe in his hands or mouth before. It occurs to me as I write this I don’t recall his ever putting any tobacco in the pipe, he did light it, but I don’t recall any tobacco.

The camera work, stunt work, special and visual effects are outstanding. The flight scenes are great and you can actually see some of the dog fight maneuvers pilots use. It is worth the price of admission just to see the flight/fight scenes. The acting is good.

Please see Red Tails in a theater for the full effect of the flying and fighting, it is worth the extra money. This is a chapter in a story that should never be forgotten, a story of the Greatest Generation.

Like many people I sometimes get so wrapped up in the daily routine(s) that I miss things that are important. Such is Charles Ferguson’s documentary Inside Job. Released by Sony Classic Pictures in February 2010, it is both a primer and history of the 2008+ crash of the housing bubble and its continuing effect on the US and world economy. Ferguson shared the 2011 Academy Award for Best Documentary with co-producer Audrey Marrs.

Matt Damon’s lean and articulate narration adds an honesty and credibility to the film. Job is full of panoramic views of lands, cities, and the earth rather than an endless parade of talking heads (they are there of course but presented in an interesting manner), easy on the eye and brain. Many of those interviewed quickly find themselves adrift in a self-made sea of revealed deceptions and equivocations. This is due to the excellent preparation by the interviewer off camera (Ferguson?). Very much like the “gotcha interviews” Mike Wallace used to do on Sixty Minutes. It isn’t proper I suppose to enjoy another’s discomfort but you and I are forgiven when the subject was one of the masterminds of the current economic situation.

While the banking crisis was occurring I believed Henry Paulson was the best man for Secretary of the Treasury. I no longer believe that and it is not just because, as Job reveals, his sale of Goldman Sachs holdings upon assuming the job a Secretary was tax-free under a law signed by the first President Bush. Those holdings amounted to more than 50 million dollars.

It is a pleasure to watch a noted economist and author of a report suggesting the Stability of the Icelandic banking system (handsomely paid for by the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce) explain the typographical error that must have occurred on his curriculum vitae (written after the crash) suggesting the same report noted the Instability of the Icelandic banking system.

After identifying who the villains are (usually letting them do it for themselves), and noting that no-one has been held accountable, Ferguson pulls us past the Status of Liberty while Damon challenges each, armed with this new knowledge, to action.

Job is an outstanding resource for a quick introduction into how recession, CDO, CDS, AIG, and trillion have come lately and easily to our tongues. The most damning fact left for the audience to ponder is the lack of indictments and prison time for the principles and the failure of the Obama administration to appoint a special prosecutor.

Inside Job will make you mad and it will make you think. You will not agree with every point but you will not forget you saw it. Inside Job is currently available on Comcast Cable for free. It runs about one hour and fifty minutes. Enjoy.
